Off into the woods I went...
Nov. 10th, 2019 01:59 pmI've been sick since Wednesday. I was feeling a bit out of it on Tuesday but went to training anyway (90% of the time spending two and a half hours fighting makes me feel better, weirdly) and then woke up on Wednesday full of mucus and woe. I sensibly worked from home on Wednesday and Thursday in the hope that avoiding the office air-conditioning would help, but the fever descended anyway and I ended up taking Friday as a sick day. I now feel as though I'm gently convalescing, like a Chalet School student sent to the Alps to recuperate.
This weekend, consequently, has not been very productive (in terms of law study), though I did have an Engling reunion yesterday evening and went for a walk today in the woods near my house. I listened to the 50th episode of My Favourite Murder, which is currently my favourite podcast, and petted three (3) dogs.
It was much warmer than I expected and I was a bit too hot as I had prudently worn a base layer, t-shirt, jumper, raincoat and scarf for my convalescing foray into the outdoors. It also turned out that crossing the fields to the woods was quite a muddy, mulchy enterprise. Fortuitously, I had worn my walking boots.

Some very beautiful autumn colours. I think because these woods adjourn a sizeable park, there are much fewer people wandering around in the woods as most of them seem to go jogging/dog-walking/child-exercising in the park rather than the woods.

The light was so lovely, sort of warm and golden. The woods had a really satisfying smell as well, cold and green and earthy. I think autumn in the woods is one of my favourite smells of all time.

This was a very satisfying bit to walk along (below). There are wooden ridges set into the mud, I think to prevent slipping of both land and person. I met two dogs here and sadly photoed neither, but we were all very delighted to encounter each other.

It felt like a gift to descending towards this tree and bridge combination. I felt like I'd accidentally walked through into a magical land. This tree was resplendent. A closer photo below.

And here some delightful mushrooms! I was careful not to get between them, just in case I stumbled into a circle. There was a dog who looked very excited to see me crouching to take this photo, but who wasn't quite up to the challenge of getting up the muddy slope to say hello properly.

All in all, it was a very lovely restorative walk. I enjoyed listening to my podcast and being out in the sunshine and the cold. Then I came home and proceeded to study not at all, and instead have been reading Naruto fanfic on the sofa and half-napping while watching Modern Family. It's OK. I'll study much more productively once my body is well again.
